“Shouldn’t have stopped”

I knew I shouldn’t have stopped but it felt so good.

Not having any responsibilities.

Not having to do anything when I woke up.

I shouldn’t have stopped.

But it felt so good I didn’t want to start again.

“Shores of my youth”

It was there, on the shore’s of my youth, I saw her again.

I saw someone I thought I’d lost.

She was still the same.

Or course she was.

I was the one who’d changed.

I was the one who’d left.

I saw in her the same woman I had left behind all those years ago.

She hadn’t changed one bit.

I had.

I had changed for the worse.

“With their help”

He didn’t want me to stay.

But staying was my only option.

I couldn’t see a future without him.

There wasn’t one.

So, I stayed.

Even though he didn’t want me to

I stayed when he told me to leave.

Thinking he would get over it.

Get over whatever he was angry about.

Like he had so many times before.

But he didn’t.

He called the police.

And, with their help, I left him alone.

“Let me in”

If I came over tonight would you let me in?

Would you turn me away?

I wish I knew the answer.

It’s the only answer I want.

Forget about everything else.

Forget about things we’ve said.

There’s only one answer I want.

If I came over tonight would you let me in?

“As they tore him apart”

I know I should have done more.

I sat back and watched as they tore him apart.

When I could have stopped it.

I could have said what I knew and none of it would have happened.

But I didn’t.

I sat back and watched as they tore him apart.

“The darkness in him”

There was something inside of him.

Something he didn’t want anyone to see.

I saw that side of him once.

That side he always kept hidden.

He doesn’t know this.

He never will.

I fear I will have to face that darkness if I tell him.

I’d snook into his home.

I wanted to see what he was hiding from me.

What he had hidden for so long.

That night I saw it.

I saw the darkness he hid inside.

And he doesn’t know.
