“Coming back”

I had to come back.

There was no other option.

I’d told them I would come back.

And I was going to keep that promise.

I did my best.

I really did.

I did everything I could to return.

But in the end, it was impossible.

I had been sent to a place there was no returning from.

And it took me a long time before I realized that.

“His laugh”

I will always remember his laugh.

That warm, lovely laugh of his.

I will always remember hearing it from the downstairs living room and I knew he was home.

I knew he was back.

That laugh is one of my fondest memories.

The only memory of him that I will bring with me for the rest of my life.

It is the only thing of his that I cannot forget.

The only thing I don’t want to forget.

“Would you do it?”

I think I was able to do things that I could bear doing in real life when I was there.

I could be a person I didn’t have to courage to be.

I could do things that would otherwise have been too painful.

I loved it there.

Loved it because I could escape the boring life that I was living on a day to day basis.

I could escape that.

So answer me this.

If you had the change to become someone else, to do things you wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.

With no consequences.

Wouldn’t you do it?

“An example”

I think it was a great example of that.

A great example of what could have happened if I’d been just a little early.

Or a little late.

I came there just in time.

And I was rewarded for it.

I became a sensation because of it.

Because I was in the right place at the right time.

I think the whole ordeal is a great example of chance.

Of what can happen.

If you go out into the world.

“Like me”

I don’t think she liked me much when she first saw me.

How could she?

I wasn’t a very nice person then.

But I did my best to convince her I was someone else.

That I was something else.

That I was a person who actually cared.

Not just one of those people who would throw her out when I got bored.

It seems to have worked.

In the end, she began liking me.

She cared about me.

She loved me.

And I loved her.

“Childish”

She didn’t like any of that.

She was her own woman.

None could tell her what to do.

Least of all her parents.

I always loved it when our grandparents came to visit.

She would show them that they didn’t have any power over her.

And that she could do what she wanted.

Even though she was an adult she had to show them that they couldn’t tell her what to do.

I loved watching that.

And it wasn’t until I myself was an adult that I realized how childish she’d been.

“The worst employee”

I sure was.

And I was probably the worst employee they’d ever had.

I was poor in those days.

I didn’t know any other way of living.

Other than stealing food to survive.

So I worked in that kitchen for a long time.

Stealing a loaf of bread every afternoon when none was watching.

What little money I made working there I somehow managed to burn through just as quickly as I got them.

So I never had any left over for food.

I stole to survive in those days.

And I worked at that place.

Until I was finally caught and they could get rid of the worst employee they’d ever had.
