“Had we hurried”

By the time we got there the town was already in ruins.

The ground was covered in mud from the rain that had fallen the past couple of days and we kept slipping as we tried to climb the little hill up towards the town.

Once there, we saw that there was nothing we could do.

They had beaten us there and the entire town had to pay because of our slow progress.

I saw people laying in the mud in the middle of what was once the main street and I saw houses burned to the ground and animals running around eating anything they could find.

It was a scene I will never forget.

And I can never forgive myself because I know we could have been there to stop it.

If our leaders had told us to hurry.
