“I’ve been to war”

The very thought of what war can do to a man disturbs me.

I’ve seen grown men cry for their mothers and I’ve seen younger boys take care of them.

I’ve seen innocent people laying on the street, holding each other because they knew what was coming.

War changes people and not for the better.

I do not know how I managed to get through it with my sanity.

Why I was so lucky when others weren’t.

I’ve tried praying, asking who I was the one who was spared when so many others weren’t but I’ve yet to receive an answer.

The destruction I’ve caused will never leave my mind and I will live with the mistake I made for the rest of my life.

The mistake of going to war.
