“What he did”

I lived in a sleepy town where nothing ever happened.

Nothing.

Until that day.

Something happened in our sleepy town on that day.

Something neither of us would ever forget.

I was sitting in my window when it happened, when I heard the sirens outside and somehow I knew it was him.

I knew he had done something on that day.

Something he couldn’t get himself out of.

The call came not much later and I rushed to the school and inside I mat met with groups of crying parents all hugging each other, hoping their children hadn’t been inside.

Then I saw him being led out and I knew.

I knew what he had done.
