“Coming back”

I watched as the men passed our house and I saw the sadness in their eyes.

I wondered what they had been through while they were away and I thought to myself that they weren’t the same boys who’d left.

I thought Jeremy might be among them and I ran outside and I could see the state of their clothes.

What had they been through I thought and then I remembered hearing all the reports on the radio telling stories that I couldn’t believe because they sounded so horrific.

But watching the men come back into our village I understood that they had been true.

Everything the radio had told me was true.

For the first time, I understood what they had gone through while they were away and I understood why there was so much sadness in their eyes.

And for the first time, I understood that Jeremy wasn’t coming back.
