“What he did”

There are very few people still alive in the world today who can do what he could.

Very few.

Most of us don’t even understand what it was he did.

But we’re still amazed by it.

I wanted to learn when I was young.

I wanted to learn what it was he did.

He wouldn’t teach me

“Go out in the world and learn. I can’t teach you anything before you know what you’re doing” he used to say.

I didn’t know what he meant by that.

How could I learn something if none would tell me how?

Or what it was I was trying to learn?

I didn’t understand what he meant until I was a grown man, with a career of my own and a family of my own.

And by then it was too late.
