“Be a man”

”Be a man,” they kept telling me.

Be a man.

What does that even mean, I wonder?

Does it mean I have to be hard?

That I have to act like I’m something I’m not.

Strong, hard.

Is that what it means?

If so, then I don’t want to be a man.

I want to be the person I am.

Not someone I’m not.

I want to be kind.

Not hard and strong.

That’s not me.

That will never be me.
