Some were quick to accept it.
Others took longer.
And some didn’t want to accept it at all.
Those few were taken away, where I don’t know.
I don’t think I want to know.
We saw them being herded onto the backs of trucks before being driven away, never to be seen again.
Those of us who had been smart.
We who had understood what was happening.
Those of us who had fallen in line would have to live with the knowledge of what could have been.
What could have happened to us?
Had we been a little more stubborn.
I’m not sure I’m glad I was quick to accept it.
Maybe it would have been better to get on the backs of those trucks.
Maybe then I wouldn’t have to live in fear of what’s going to happen next.
