“What they saw”

I saw them coming home after all those years.

I could see the sadness in their eyes.

And I wondered what they had been through.

I thought it sounded cool when I saw the ads as a kid.

When I saw them coming home I was no longer a kid and I could see in their eyes the horrors they had been through.

And I was glad I was too young when it started.

I still wondered what it was they had seen.

What had created that look in their eyes?

I still wonder what they saw over there but I’m not going to ask.

They seem to not want to talk about it.

And I respect that.

But I still wonder.

I still want to know.

What they saw.
