“A curve”

The car swerved and I was jolted awake.

”What are you doing?” I asked but he didn’t answer.

He didn’t even move.

He sat there, in front of the steering wheel, as the car speeded down the dark road.

”Slow down,” I told him, but again he didn’t answer.

I could see there was something wrong.

The look in his eyes wasn’t the same.

It was different.

Something had changed.

”What’s wrong?” I asked and he didn’t answer.

I wondered what had happened.

What was wrong.

But there was nothing I could do if he didn’t want to speak.

Ahead of us, I could see a curve approaching.

I looked over at him but he had no intention of slowing.

”Why?” I asked as I watched the curve coming closer, and the man next to me made no attempt to turn.
