“In the past”

Nothing had happened all day, and James was getting restless. He needed to do something, but he didn’t know what.

What was out there to do anyway? He thought as he wandered around his apartment.

Was there anything out there anyway?

“Not really” James muttered as he stopped in the kitchen, looking for something to eat.

Of course, his fridge was empty. Another sign that he needed to leave the apartment.

“Why should I do that?” He thought and began wandering once more.

“I don’t want to leave. There’s nothing for me out there,” he thought. “Nothing at all.”
But being locked inside his apartment without any contact with anyone was wearing on James, and he knew it.

He knew that he had to leave, he had to talk to someone, but he didn’t want to. Inside the apartment, he felt safe. Nothing could get him there.

And that was all he wanted. He wanted to be safe.

Nothing more.

But there was nothing to do, and he had nothing to eat.

And so James decided that, for the first time in months, leave his apartment and venture out into the world.

The world which had failed him so many times in the past.
