“My mother told me”

When I was young, my mother told me that I had to go away if I ever wanted to get somewhere in life.

She told me that there was no future in the little town where we lived.

That I had to leave and make something of myself.

She told me that I had to be better than her. Make a life that was better than the one she had been able to make for us.

I took me many years before I understood what she had meant when she said that and by that time she was gone and I was already far away from that place.

But I never forgot those words ”Leave, there’s nothing for you here.”

Yet even far away from that place, there weren’t many opportunities for the little boy from the little town.

These people who I surrounded myself with were different from me.

And that was when I realized what my mother had been trying to tell me. I couldn’t live my life in a place where I felt I was safe all the time.

Because if you’re always safe, then you never take any risks. And if you don’t take risks, you’ll end up not getting anywhere.

I knew then that she had been right.

I knew she wanted what was best for me.

Only she didn’t know that the rest of the world didn’t want the same.
