Flash fiction: “The steps”

I stood at the bottom of the steps. Looking up I could see the peak, it was so far, so many steps. How was I ever going to walk up there?

I didn’t know if I was able to complete this journey, this test seemed the hardest of them all. But I had to try. I owed it to them to try.

The steps looked black under the dark sky, wet and slippery.

How was I going to get up there? I asked myself and looked towards the peak.

Was this all worth it?

I didn’t think so. Why had I been chosen? I never wanted this. I never wanted to be something other than what I was. I wanted to be normal.

The people in my town had all been so happy when the men came and got me. They didn’t know what was in store for me. They didn’t know that I might not come back.

I looked towards the peak once more as a bolt of lightning struck the ground around it.

I had to try. I owed them that much.
