“For someone else”

I sit at my desk. Every day and wait for the clock to strike four and I’m allowed to leave.

I hate this job. I hate the monotony of it. It’s the same thing day in and day out, never do I get to do anything new.

It wasn’t always like this. I used to love this job. The work I was doing seemed to matter. Now I know that it never did. I never did anything that was for anyone except the person I work for.

I wish I could go back to when I was a young man. Back to when I was still naive and thought that I would change the world.

Back when I woke up every morning and looked forward to the day. Looked forward to when I got into the office to do what I was told.

Life was better then. It was a life that I wanted to live. The life that I always dreamt of when I was a kid.

The idyllic life that every child who grew up in the small town where I grew up dreamt about.

A life where I would do good.

A life where I wouldn’t work just for the financial gain of someone else.

“So much left”

My day has come.

I can feel it.

It won’t be long now.

My entire family has gathered around me.

They’re telling me to let go. That it’s alright. That I don’t have to fight anymore.

But I want to fight. I don’t want to leave. Not when there’s so much that I still want to do.

I want to watch my children have children of their own. I want to be able to walk my daughters down the aisle at their weddings.

I want to grow old with my wife.

I don’t want to let go.

I don’t want to die.

Not when there’s so much that I haven’t done.

“Oliver’s love”

Oliver knew it was late. Too late for him to come over. But he didn’t care. He needed to see her. If only for a minute.

He needed to know that she was alright.

He left his house in a hurry before his father woke up and made him stay in.

He needed to get to her.

It wasn’t far to her house. He would be there in minutes. He needed to know that she was alright.

The street was quiet at this time of night, and Oliver had no problems crossing the usually busy road in front of her house.

He would see her soon. He would talk to her.

The lights were on in her apartment. She was home. She was in there.

Oliver knocked on her door and waited for an answer. She didn’t open. He knocked again and waited. This time he could hear her footsteps on the other side.

She was coming.

Soon he would be in her arms again.

Soon everything would be as it was.

She opened the door and saw him. She didn’t smile. She didn’t say anything.

“I had to see you,” Oliver said.

She didn’t say anything.

“What’s wrong,” he asked

“You shouldn’t be here. We can’t do this again.”

“But it’s fine. You’re free now. We can pick up where we left off.”

“We can’t, Oliver. It’s not safe. For either of us.”

Oliver didn’t understand what she meant. He was eighteen now. She was free. There wasn’t anything stopping them from being together?

He felt tears start building up in his eyes.

“Why?” he asked

“It was a mistake. I should never have done what I did to you” she said.

Oliver saw that she was trying to be kind, she was trying to let him down kindly. She didn’t want to see him. She didn’t want anything to do with him.

“Please” he began, tears running down his cheeks.

“I’m sorry, you have to leave,” she said and closed the door.

Three years he had waited for her. Three years to see if she was okay.

And she let him go just like that.

Oliver returned home heartbroken. Home to his father. Home to the man who got her sent away.

Home to the man who destroyed his life.

“Is she gone?”

Oliver was walking home. He was worried. Worried that she wouldn’t be there when he got back.

What if she wasn’t. What if she was gone. What would he do then?

Oliver couldn’t say. He had been with her for so long. He couldn’t remember a time when they weren’t together.

What would he do if she was gone?

In the distance, he could see his house. No lights were on, but that didn’t mean that she was gone. She rarely turned on all the lights.

As he waited by the stoplight to cross the street, Oliver thought back about the last few days.

What could he have done to make it better? What had he done to make it the way it was now.

He couldn’t see much that he could have done. Maybe this was it. Maybe her leaving would be the best thing for the both of them.

But it couldn’t be. He couldn’t be alone, not now. He loved her too much.

Oliver walked up the stairs to his door with a heavy heart. Was she in there?

He unlocked the door.

“I’m home” he yelled and waited for an answer.

“The thing”

The thing had a hold of her. Had a hold of her leg.

She couldn’t see it in the dark. But she knew what it was. She had seen it in her dreams many time before.

She wasn’t dreaming this time. This was real, the thing had a hold of her and was dragging her with it down to where it had come from.

She screamed for help as the thing dragged her across the floor of her bedroom.

But her screaming was for nothing. None else was home. She was alone.

Alone with the thing that had a hold of her leg.

She kept screaming as the thing adjusted its grip and she was lifted from the floor and jumped into the abyss.

Back to where it had come.

“leaving him”

Pacing back and forth in his apartment John knew that he didn’t have long. He knew that he had to go after her.

Before it was too late.

Her plane was leaving in an hour. After that, she would be gone forever.

He still had time to get there and tell her how he felt.

But he had to leave now.

John got in his car and set off.

The airport wasn’t far. He would get there in time.

He parked outside and ran in without closing the car door.

Inside there where boards showing the arrivals and departures.

John looked at the boards, searching for the plane she would be on.

There it was.

Gate 16

John ran past security and continued towards the gate.

He would get there in time. He would tell her how he felt and everything would be alright.

He saw the sign. Gate 16.

She was in there. On the other side of the glass wall.

He reached the doors. They where locked.

He was too late.

John knocked on the doors trying to get the attention of one of the attendants.

They ignored him.

He looked down the line of passengers boarding the plane.

She was there. Looking away from him. Looking at the plane. At her future.

He pounded on the glass. Hoping that she would hear.

She turned around and saw him.

”Katherine” John yelled, and she smiled.

She knew why he was there.

She knew what he wanted to say.

But he was too late.

She smiled at him one last time before she got on the plane and left him.

“Why?”

”What are you doing?” She asked I packed my suitcase.

I didn’t answer her.

”Why won’t you talk to me?” She was walking around the room, hoping that I might look at her.

”Fine,” She said ”leave, but don’t you think about coming back.”

I wasn’t planning on coming back. Not for her.

She’d hurt me for the last time. I wasn’t going to forgive her again.

”Please say something,” She said as I left the bedroom and headed for the door.

I wasn’t going to say anything. Not yet.

”So you’re just going to leave?” I was almost at the door ”Say something!” She screamed.

I put my hand on the door. Our door.

Was I really doing this?

I let my hand drop to my side and turned around ready to talk.

”Why?”
